Havana, May 22nd. - Operations in the Alameda-2 well, in the municipality of Martí, in the province of Matanzas, identified a shallow reservoir with oil, of more than 18 degrees api - measure of density of crude oil established by the American Petroleum Institute, which exceeds the quality of crude oil traditionally extracted in the northern Cuban belt, known for its heavy oils.
Workers from the company Unión Cuba-Petroleo (Cupet) and the Australian company Melbana Energy have carried out, this year, repair work in the well, achieving better quality oil production.
Cupet informed Cubadebate that these results reinforce the potential of the site and, although current production accounts for only 0.005 percent of total oil production in Cuba, encouraging advances could open opportunities for the country's energy industry.
The Australian company, Melbana Energy, is part of the investment group operating in Cuba and, to date, the company has drilled four wells in Martí and Alameda-2 territory, drilled in 2023, is still in the process of being evaluated.
Among the next steps, the company plans to drill new wells to confirm the continuity of the production layer, assess the gaspetrolility potential of the discovery, and make a declaration of commerciality, once the results are consolidated. (Text and photo: Granma Digital)
