Cuban delegation participates in Climate Week in Panama


Havana, May 28th. - A group of Cuban experts from the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) participated in the Climate Week held in Panama City, which included several specialized events.

This type of convention was a space for technical dialogue and political consultation, in each of which it was deepened and followed on its specific topics, said the agency’s Communication Department.

They added that they also expanded the networks of contacts and strengthened working links with countries and international agencies, to promote the country’s climate and economic and social development agenda.

Cuba has a high-ranking climate policy, a state plan to confront climate change (Trea Vida), which represents the umbrella in the establishment of national priorities, and medium- and long-term actions, that protect the nation’s major climate commitments.

These include the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC); the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Adaptation Plan, he added, quoting a report by Jessica Fernández Casañas, head of the Department of Climate Change, of the Environment Directorate-General of CITMA).

National representation spoke equally at the Fifth Global Dialogue and an investment-focused event under the Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt city) work programme on mitigation ambition and implementation; the Global DNA Forum on the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement; the Third Dialogue within the framework of the United Arab Emirates Work Programme for a Just Transition; and the Consultation to present updated technical guidelines for national adaptation plans to Parties.

Also in the NDC Clinic, the laboratories of the Implementation Forum. Carbon market financing, technologies and article 6 and the Latin America and Caribbean 2025 Designated National Entity Forum (NDS) and Capacity Development Programme.

The meetings focused on presenting the progress of work programmes and their technical, methodological and application aspects, based on successful experiences in national and local contexts, where mobilization and access to climate and other financial resources were highlighted; related models for key sectors (especially forest areas); innovation and transfer of technologies for climate change adaptation and mitigation; Fair transition and community participation on climate adaptation and resilience; and strengthening national capacities.
