Havana, May 28th. - May- At the end of April, Cuba recorded 2,377 traffic accidents, a decrease of 150 incidents compared to a similar period of 2024; but although they decrease in the number of events and injuries, the deaths increase.
In presenting the behavior of the accident, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Transit Body of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police, said that the human factor remains the main cause in 91 per cent of these accidents.
Of the casualties with serious consequences in the country, it transpired that Mondays and Wednesdays show the highest number of accidents; Sunday and Tuesday are the most fatal days, and the fundamental schedule ranges from 15:00 to 18:00 hours.
He added that among the main causes of the accident are not to pay due attention to the control of the vehicle; not to respect the right of way, the stop sign and the red light; improper overtaking; not to keep distance; not to respect the pedestrian and violations typical of the vehicle, in addition to the excess speed, which increases all indicators and concentrates 21 per cent of fatal victims.
He reported that in 8 per cent (196) of accidents the deterioration of the tracks, which, although the cause of the event, did influence the maneuver.
Similarly, it considered that the largest number of victims is provided by drivers; the highest records and increases are concentrated in young people between 21 and 25 years of age, and in those over 70 years of age, and the downward trend of minors continues.
Colonel Rodríguez Fernández detailed that the events with the participation of the pedestrian - although they decrease by 18 percent - continue to be the most dangerous type of accident, and occur, mainly, as a result of excess speed, in addition to the persistence of violations and lack of perception of risk.
He noted that motorcycles and mopeds - vehicle park that continues to rise - were responsible in more than half of the casualties, and increased by 25 per cent of the deaths.
As part of the confrontation, 235 959 fines, 3 883 administrative measures, 344 cancellations of licences were imposed in the country, and 61 012 technical inspections were carried out on the public road.
In his speech, the Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, said that the results are not satisfactory, and said that alternatives to more efficient measures should be sought.
He proposed increasing disclosure actions to insist on the correct performance of both pedestrians and drivers on the road, in addition to increasing alcohol testing points. (Digital Grammy) (Photo: Internet taken)
