Camagüey: Scientific community takes environmental action (+ Photos)


Camagüey, June 4th. - With the slogan "Free from plastic pollution," the Camagüey scientific community is developing a program of activities in honor of World Environment Day, which will be celebrated on June 5. 

Yelena Estévez Armas, senior environmental education specialist at the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), explained that the event will include an award ceremony for the "Importance of Recycling" contest, along with sanitation and cleaning activities on the riverbanks of the Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences in Camagüey. 

She added that the provincial workshops on Business Innovation and Commitments to Sustainable Development from the Territory, and Recycling to Avoid Pollution, will be held in their second and third editions, respectively. 

In addition, the environmental festival "My Mangrove and I" will take place at the intervention sites of the My Coast Project, she added.

Camagüey, a province recognized among those highlighted for World Environment Day, has 54 sources of atmospheric emissions, and as a result of the AirQ+ project, a new climate station and air pollution monitoring equipment have been built in Nuevitas, stated Lisbet Font Vila, territorial delegate of Citma. 

She reported that, in the implementation of the environmental policy associated with the principles of the circular economy, 12 science, technology, and innovation projects and 19 initiatives are being carried out in the 13 municipalities, with concrete results in the recycling, reuse, recovery, and extension of the useful life of products.

Similarly, she said, impacts are being achieved in projects associated with the recovery of approximately 28,175 tons (t) of raw materials, which has allowed for a saving of 32,611.9 cubic meters of water. 

She also noted that the production of 8,744.5 tons of worm castings and 84,056 tons of compost for soil improvement has been promoted, while 94,673 tons of waste have been eliminated from the environment and 185,176.66 liters of biofertilizer have been produced.
