Camagüey, June 5th. - Camagüey joined the celebration of World Environment Day, commemorated every June 5th, through a series of activities under the global theme "No Plastic Pollution." This initiative reflects the province's commitment to sustainability, the conservation of important ecosystems, and the protection of local flora and fauna.

The actions carried out sought to raise community awareness about the importance of reducing plastic use and promoting responsible practices that contribute to preserving ecological balance, ensuring a healthy environment.

The protection of biodiversity in the region is exemplified by initiatives such as the Flamingo Breeding Center at the mouth of the Máximo River, near the community of Mola in the municipality of Minas. This breeding center serves as a sanctuary for these birds.

The coastal wetlands area benefits from projects like Mi Costa, which seek to restore mangroves and strengthen resilience to climate change. Furthermore, the community actively participates in monitoring and cleanup activities, demonstrating how science and traditional knowledge combine to protect migratory and endemic species.

In addition to this effort, the Minas Crocodile Farm stands out, a fundamental project for the conservation of endemic reptiles. This farm not only facilitates the controlled reproduction of endangered species, but also promotes environmental education and adopts sustainable practices that help reduce human impact on their natural habitat.

In the urban heart of the capital of Cabarete, the Casino Campestre Park Zoo carries out a transcendental educational effort. With new specimens such as antelopes and zebras, this space not only diversifies its heritage but also promotes sociocultural programs for children, teaching them about conservation and captive breeding. Interactive workshops and guided tours turn the park—the largest urban park in Cuba—into a living classroom of love for wildlife.

Scientific innovation is also promoted through projects run by the Camagüey branch of the National Association of Animal Production. One of the key strategies is the development of genetic reserves, which are essential for facilitating research, breeding, and the recovery of endangered species.

Reforestation efforts led by the National Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians in the region have also increased the provincial forest cover index, with an emphasis on agricultural land. These advances, combined with the circular economy and solar energy, position the province as an environmental benchmark in Cuba.

Camagüey, with its cultural richness and natural beauty, continues to strengthen its efforts to preserve the environment, ensuring that future generations can enjoy a healthy and sustainable landscape. (Maykel Torres La Rosa/Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photos: Taken from the Internet)
