Moscow, June 4th. - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday again criticized members of his predecessor Joe Biden's administration for using an autopen (a device that automatically reproduces a handwritten signature) to sign documents on behalf of the then president, calling it one of the biggest scandals in the country's history.
"With the exception of the rigged 2020 presidential election, the Autopen is the greatest political scandal in American history!" the White House resident wrote on his Truth Social platform. Trump has repeatedly mentioned this case in the context of questioning the former Democratic president's mental capacity.
In March of this year, Trump declared that most of the pardons signed by Biden were invalid, claiming they were signed using an autopen without his knowledge or direct approval. He also accused members of the House Select Committee, whom he referred to as political thugs, of destroying and eliminating all evidence of their investigation.
In May, the president accused his predecessor's entourage of betrayal. According to the Republican leader, Biden "was not in favor of open borders" and "it wasn't his idea to open the border and nearly destroy the country."
"It was people who knew he had cognitive issues who took over the Autopen. They stole the U.S. Presidency and put us in great danger. This is treason at the highest level!" Trump wrote at the time on Truth Social.
On June 1, the U.S. House of Representatives identified four people who used the autopen to sign documents on behalf of Joe Biden during his presidency. "We want an explanation of the exact process by which legally significant documents, such as pardons and executive orders, ended up in the autopen with Joe Biden's signature forged on them," said James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee.
In this context, Reuters reported on Monday that the Trump administration ordered an investigation into the pardons and commutations granted by the former president at the end of his term. The agency obtained access to an electronic communication in which Ed Martin, the Justice Department's pardons prosecutor, explains that he was tasked with verifying, among other matters, whether Biden was competent at the time of granting them and whether others took advantage of him through the use of the autopen or other means.
In January of this year, before leaving office, Joe Biden commuted the sentences of some 2,500 convicts, becoming the president with the largest number of pardons and commutations in US history.
He also preemptively pardoned his siblings (James, Francis, and Valerie) and their respective spouses (Sara Jones Biden and John Owens). Shortly before that, in December, despite having promised not to interfere in Justice Department matters, he issued a pardon for his son, Hunter, who was found guilty in June of last year on three federal weapons and drug charges.
