Ramala, Jun 6th. - The Palestinian Centre for the Defense of Prisoners today denounced the disappearance of hundreds of Palestinian detainees, especially from the Gaza Strip, after being arrested by Israel.
In a statement, the institution stressed that the Public Committee against Torture in Israel reported on the arrest of some 2,000 790 Palestinians in Gaza, but 144 of them are unknown.
He also warned about the absence of legal guarantees or international supervision of living conditions in that country's prisons, which, he said, raises serious concerns.
We continually receive testimonies and reports indicating that Palestinian prisoners, particularly those in Gaza, suffer from heinous abuses such as physical and psychological torture, isolation from the outside world and denial of medical care, said Muhammad Shaaban, director of the Centre.
Such practices constitute a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and the norms of international law, he said.
Shaaban called for the formation of an independent international commission of inquiry to deal with crimes and serious violations committed in Israeli prisons.
It also demanded an end to torture, to know the fate of the disappeared and to allow human rights organizations and lawyers to visit such centres.
What happens in these facilities represents a stain on humanity," said the activist, who said they will not remain silent in the face of these violations. (Text and photo: PL)
