Poets of the world for Palestine

Havana, June 13 – The World Poetry Movement (WPW), which brings together hundreds of poets from all over the world, has called for urgent action through poetry in defense of the Palestinian people, victims of criminal aggression by the Israeli armed forces since October 2023.

The WPW, according to its self-definition, “seeks to contribute, through the globalization and realization of poetic actions, to the construction of a new humanism for the twenty-first century, permanently promoting intercultural dialogue through the fraternal and universal language of poetry, a path to the transformation and renewal of consciousness, for the benefit of a humanity at peace, reconciled with nature, and aware of both cultural diversity and the sense of justice and social inclusion in the processes of cultural development of all the planet's inhabitants.”

This latest call invites poetic actions on June 28 and 29 in support of the Palestinian people, vilely massacred by the Israeli hordes. Below is the full text of the call:

PALESTINE IS THE NAME OF ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE EARTH

Humanity is burning in the flames of war. The tender bodies of Gaza's children are burning in the daily Zionist bombings. The mobilization of the people and the hesitant declarations of politicians rejecting the brutal invasion are insufficient to contain it. Politicians' declarations of repudiation mean nothing compared to the pain of a brotherly people. We are Palestinians; the world's childhood is being exterminated in a beloved and beautiful country; the roots that bind us to the land are being severed.

We are poets, and our only instrument to defend tortured life is language. We will use it to the fullest and deploy a vast poetic action throughout the world to denounce the annihilation of the pale murderers. Life is sacred; no one has the right to kill it. The Palestinian land is sacred; no occupying force has the right to take it. The martyrs are sacred; their red blood on the green grass will lift the soul of the world.

We call for a global action on June 28th and 29th with mass poetry readings, performances, lectures and discussions, concerts and exhibitions in public and closed spaces, and for the organization of workshops and conferences in schools and colleges in cities and villages around the world to disseminate Palestinian poetry of resistance.

We know that writing and reading poems will not be enough to extinguish the war in Gaza and prevent extermination, but they will be part of the framework of a global poetic revolution to shake up the confused spirit of our species and return it to its deepest course, walking firmly towards the realization of full peace on earth, in deep unity, toward the reunion of the great objectives forgotten by humanity.
