Havana, June 23 – The second phase of the current 64th bivalent oral polio vaccination campaign continues today throughout the country for children who received a dose in the first phase.
This week will be a recovery week for those who were ill or who for other reasons were unable to get vaccinated in the previous period.
During the first phase, scheduled from April 21 to 26, all children over one month old and under three years old were vaccinated with the first dose simultaneously throughout the country.
Poliomyelitis is a contagious infectious disease affecting the central nervous system, mainly in children, and can cause muscle atrophy, paralysis, deformity and in some cases death. Cuba is the first country in Latin America to achieve the elimination of this disease, and in 1995 it received the Polio Eradication Certification from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, for its acronym in Spanish).
Currently in the country, 11 vaccines against 13 diseases are being applied as part of the child immunization scheme and eight of them are domestically produced. (PL) (Photo: Taken from Internet)
