Cuba, Battle of Carabobo, independence, Venezuela, world and Latin American history

Today marks the 204th anniversary of the Battle of Carabobo

Havana, June 24 – The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela commemorates today the 204th anniversary of the Battle of Carabobo, a decisive event in Venezuela's independence and a milestone in universal and Latin American history.

The battle, fought on June 24, 1821, in the Carabobo savannah and led by Simón Bolívar, marked the definitive defeat of the Spanish royalist army and a decisive step on the path to the liberation of Caracas and other South American territories.

Although the war continued until 1823, with subsequent campaigns such as the Naval Battle of the Lake of Maracaibo and the capture of Puerto Cabello, the royalist defeat at Carabobo marked the end of Spanish colonial power in Venezuela and allowed Bolívar to begin his liberation campaign toward the south of the continent.

For Venezuelans, this victory represents the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the independence heroes, an inspiration for new generations in Venezuela, Cuba, and Latin America.

The commemoration of this event reaffirms the commitment to the defense of independence, social justice, and Latin American brotherhood, fundamental pillars in the region's history and present.

Cuba honors this example by strengthening the alliance between both peoples in defense of the sovereignty and independence of Latin America and the Caribbean, a bond embodied in the admiration of the National Hero José Martí for the figure of the Liberator. (Text and photo: ACN)
