Cuban film Wild Woman wins grand prize in Italy

Havana, July 7 – The Cuban film The Wild Woman, by filmmaker Alán González, embraces the joy of a new recognition today, having been crowned Best Film at the Baarìa Film Festival in Sicily, Italy.

The news was announced by the president of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), Alexis Triana, on his Facebook profile.

Another ovation from Cubacine ICAIC for its director Alán González, Lola Amores, and the entire production team, the director wrote.

Since its premiere in 2023, the young filmmaker's debut feature has enjoyed a successful run, supported by multiple awards, including the Grand Prize for Feature Films at the second edition of the Kinolatino Film Festival in Belgium, in addition to those won at the Ceará Film Festival in Brazil, and the Havana New Latin American Film Festival.

According to the official website of the Baarìa Film Festival, the event launches in 2025 the cinematographic proposal of an international review, with works from all over the world, united by the theme of the island.

Sicily will not, therefore, be the sole protagonist; but it will continue in the foreground, with the re-proposal of films set there or related to Sicilian characters, including tributes and restorations.

The Festival will be Sicily's bridge to Italy and the rest of the world, an event deeply rooted in the region, but not self-referential. An opportunity to enjoy good cinema, seeking usability without flattening, avoiding the pitfalls of experimentalism without sacrificing quality.

It will also be an archipelago of stories in motion, to rediscover the region and navigate toward other Sicilies scattered around the world. (Text and photo: PL)
