Havana, July 14 - Although only half a point behind the leaders at the top, Camagüey native Carlos Daniel Albornoz said goodbye today in eighth place at the Valencia International Open, the birthplace of chess.
A Sunday victory over Indian player Marani Rajendran Venkatesh left the Camagüey native with 6.5 points out of nine possible in a standings dominated by Spanish player Josep Manuel López with seven points and a better tiebreak than Ukrainian Sergey Fedorchuk.
Fedorchuk defeated Poland's Jakub Seemann in the farewell, sending him to third place with 6.5 points. Seemann had held the lead for almost the entire tournament, even being responsible for the only defeat suffered by Albornoz.
This weekend also marked the conclusion of the Villa de Benasque International Tournament, with a larger Cuban presence and more than 550 players in total.
Frenchman Loic Travadon took first place by completing 7.5 points out of a possible 10, showing better scores in the tiebreaker than Israeli Dan Zoler, Indian Anad Pranav, and fellow Frenchman Pierre Laurent-Paoli Pierre, who finished in second to fourth places, respectively.
The best for a Cuban was Ernesto Fernández's 23rd place, with 7.5 points, a similar total to Lennis Martínez, who "anchored" one spot lower.
Roberto Carlos Gómez completed seven points and placed 33rd, while Maritza Arribas achieved six points for 90th place, a position better than her initial ranking of 102nd. (Text and photo: ACN)
