Havana, July 26 – National institutions praised the contribution of United Nations agencies to their project entitled "Incorporating biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation into sustainable tourism development."
The Center for Energy Information Management and Development (CUBAENERGIA, for its acronym in Spanish) mentioned the role of funding provided by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the UN Development Program (UNDP).
From the national point of view, its implementation is in charge of the Ministry of Tourism through its Technical Services Directorate, its Real Estate Agency for Tourism, CUBANACAN Travel, the Gran Caribe Hotel Group and ITH Marketing Company.
The Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment is the project's executor, and the Institute of Ecology and Systematics is the technical director.
According to CUBAENERGÍA, its essential purpose is to integrate the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and climate change mitigation into tourism practices, especially in vulnerable coastal and marine areas.
To this end, it noted, innovative management models are being developed, technical capacities are being strengthened, and sustainable financial mechanisms are being promoted. Progress has been made, particularly in Component 3 (energy), with an Energy Management System based on the requirements of the Cuban Standard ISO 50001:2019.
This action is part of a national strategy aimed at promoting more responsible and environmentally friendly tourism, which was highlighted in recent board meetings at hotel facilities in the Cayo Coco tourist pole, including the Meliá Cayo Coco Hotel, the Meliá Costa Rey Hotel, the Mojito Hotel, the Iberostar Origin Daiquirí Hotel, and the Tryp Cayo Coco Hotel.
The actions continued at the Brisas del Caribe, Meliá Las Antillas, Arenas Doradas, Muthu Varadero, and Starfish Varadero hotels.
Component 3 is coordinated by CUBAENERGIA and is focused on demonstrating low-emission standards, procedures, and technologies, with the goal of significantly reducing greenhouse gases associated with the tourism sector. (Source: ACN)
