Havana, August 6.- Making the most of the fastest chess modality, Blitz, left the Camagüey players as champions of the school and pioneer tournaments held recently in Santa Clara.
It was precisely the hosts of Villa Clara who dominated the contest of the Game Science after closing the segment of classic games, but did not calculate the "variant" defended by the Camagüey players in the matches agreed to only three minutes per player.
Ultimately, the team from the land of the tinajones (earthenware jars) totaled 71,375 points in the overall school category, leaving Havana (63,375) and Villa Clara (63,000) in second and third place, in that order.
Among the under-12s -also known as the pioneer category- a similar situation occurred, with Camagüey at the top, totaling 40,750 points. Although Cienfuegos was second in that category with 39,000 points, the Villa Clara players were third with 38,000 points.
This is the first time Camagüey has won both categories in the same year. They've done a good job and deserve congratulations, Cuban federation president Carlos Rivero told JIT, who also praised the Cienfuegos players' second-place among the pioneers.
Also worth mentioning is the progress of Guantánamo, a territory that doesn't usually occupy the top spots and this year finished in sixth place overall with four medals combined across both categories. The director added, also highlighting that Villa Clara and Havana maintained their usual good positions.
As individuals, Matanzas native Liennys Ferrer and Camagüey native Felipe Herrera stood out, chosen as the best of the tournament with two and three gold medals, respectively.
In school and pioneer chess, awards were given for teams and the top three places on each of the four boards formed by the school teams. Among the youngest children, there was an individual competition, one for the entire group without distinction of gender, and another for girls. (Text and photo: JIT)
