Havana, August 26 - Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, dedicated a heartfelt message on the social media platform X to the Brazilian intellectual and theologian Frei Betto, congratulating him on his birthday and describing him as “a school of ethics and love for humanity.”
In his official profile, the Cuban leader acknowledged the Dominican friar’s preference for “human social networks over digital ones” and urged young generations not to stop reading his columns and books.
“He prefers human social networks over digital ones, but it’s worth congratulating him wherever young people access it, recommending that they continue to read his columns and books. @freibetto is a school of ethics and love for humanity. Happy birthday, brother.”
A deep and historic relationship of friendship and solidarity has linked Frei Betto to Cuba for decades.
Betto has been a tireless advocate for social justice and has extensively written about the Cuban experience, analyzing both its achievements and challenges from an ethical and supportive perspective.
His most famous book, “Fidel and Religion,” is the result of extensive conversations with Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, the historical leader of the Revolution, who offers revelations about his personal development in the dialogue and candidly discusses his views on religion.
