Popular rice movement revitalized in Pinar del Río

Pinar del Río, August 27 - The popular rice movement in Pinar del Río has exceeded 7,000 hectares so far this year, a figure similar to that harvested in the so-called specialized sector.

This reflects the growing interest among more than 2,500 identified producers in the province, who cultivate small plots and self-sustaining areas, nearly matching the output of the main rice-producing company in the region and contributing to supplies in markets and agricultural fairs.

“The rice production was high, but then it experienced a significant decline, reaching a low point. Today, it is recovering,” said Ariel García Pérez, director of the Los Palacios Agroindustrial Grain Company.

“Our specialists advise on cereal production. The popular variety is grown by everyone—teachers, workers, doctors, and small farmers. This has always distinguished the province, even though at this moment the specialized variety surpasses it in terms of planting,” he added.

García Pérez noted that “now it can be seen along ditches, on paths, in every little corner. Generally, it is transplant rice, the best technology available in Cuba. When you plant it, it is already a seedling a month old, and you take it to a prepared area, free from weeds, which results in higher yields and better performance while using fewer resources.” (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
