Havana, September 8. - President Miguel Díaz-Canel affirmed today that the Cuban government maintains priority attention on the critical situation of the electricity generation system, especially in the eastern region, where progress is being made in gradually restoring service.
In a message posted on social media, the head of state highlighted the sustained efforts of the workers of the Electric Union, whom he thanked for their work.
“Upon returning to #Cuba, we are closely monitoring the critical situation with electricity generation and the gradual restoration of service in the eastern region, thanks to the workers of the Electric Union,” the president wrote on X, adding that “the issue has been a priority in all our conversations during our tour of Asia.”
The day before, a fault in a 220 kV line caused the disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN, for its acronym in Spanish) from the province of Las Tunas to Guantánamo, in the eastern part of the Caribbean country.
According to reports from the Ministry of Energy and Mines on social media, the electrical system was restored in the affected areas at 1:25 a.m. local time.
The Electricity Director of the ministry, Lázaro Guerra, explained on national television that the SEN disconnection was caused by adverse weather conditions in the area.
Cuba is engaged in an electroenergetic recovery strategy, which has among its key elements achieving energy sovereignty in the shortest possible time, aiming to meet the needs of the population and the economy, rehabilitate the networks, seek solutions for emergency generator groups, and advance in the energy transition.
