Havana, September 12. – The IV edition of the Gran Retto Varadero 2025 Open Water Crossing is getting ready to kick off this Friday with an opening ceremony on the seaside city's boulevard.
The sports atmosphere will ignite with a caravan that will tour the main streets of Varadero.
Prior to the parade, a press conference will bring together national and international media to provide an update on the event's details. Around 600 competitors will liven up the Saturday and Sunday sessions in a spectacle of endurance and open water technique.
The competition will begin on Saturday on the beaches of the Barceló-Solymar-Arenas Blancas hotel complex, with gender-specific events over distances of 750 meters, 1.5 kilometers, and 3 kilometers.
In the afternoon, the Sports Festival will take center stage in the pool on 37th Street, featuring relays in female, male, and mixed formats. A dominoes festival will also be held for couples as part of the competition's recreational program.
On Sunday, elite distances of 5 and 10 kilometers will be swum, considered the main highlight of the competition. The partial awards ceremony will close the competitive day before the official closing ceremony in the evening.
Pedro Orlando Pérez, director of the Havanatur Varadero Branch, told JIT that the peninsula is ready to welcome competitors and participants in what is a celebration attended by entire families, especially Mexicans, among the main foreign participants.
The event is organized by the Mexican brand Gran Retto, the Cubadeportes S.A. Trading Company, Havantur S.A., Taino Tour, the INDER, the Ministry of Tourism, the Matanzas Provincial Sports Directorate, and the Cárdenas government.
In the previous edition, Mexico took glory in the elite distances, leaving its mark in Varadero. (Text and photo: JIT)
