Fidel's first speech at the UN is recalled

Havana, September 26. - Sixty-five years after Fidel's first speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Cuba today recalls the relevance of his words, which denounced the philosophy of war.

On the social network X, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, pointed out that the intervention of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, then Prime Minister, is a reference in the history of the United Nations.

The Foreign Minister, who is currently at United Nations Headquarters in New York for the 80th session of the UNGA, also emphasized that the speech set the tone of Revolutionary Diplomacy.

Rodríguez Parrilla highlighted the memorable phrase from Fidel's speech: "Let the philosophy of plunder disappear, and the philosophy of war will have disappeared."

On September 26, 1960, the young leader of the nascent Cuban Revolution, dressed in guerrilla uniform, took to the UNGA podium for a speech lasting more than four hours in which he emphasized the Cuban people's right to self-determination and the defense of their sovereignty.

The Cuban leader outlined his government's position: "against colonialism, against exploitation, against monopolies, against militarism, against the arms race, against the game of war.

According to press reports from that time, his words were interrupted about thirty times by applause from the delegates at the United Nations General Assembly. (Text and photo: ACN)
