Mayabeque, September 26. -Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, today confirmed the efficiency of agroecological practices at La Asunción farm, located in the municipality of San José de las Lajas, capital of the western province of Mayabeque.
According to Diario Mayabeque, the leader spoke with producer Rolando Muñoz Casas, a member of the Nelson Fernández Credit and Services Cooperative, about the main crops, crop rotation, seeds improvement, and the application of bioproducts.
The Head of State showed interest in the production of fruit trees destined for school snacks, the yields of native corn, and the use of efficient microorganisms, worm humus, and other biological means that increase productivity without harming the environment.
Accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the PCC Central Committee, Díaz-Canel toured areas of the farm, founded in 1997, covering 30 hectares, of which two are dedicated to papaya and six to black and red beans.
Muñoz Casas explained that the high yields in papaya are due to the use of agroecological techniques such as trichoderma and Ecomic, which allow more than 20 tons to be allocated to the State and 15 to tourism.
La Asunción farm is part of an international collaboration project with the Mexican Agency for Development, aimed at diversifying crops and guaranteeing food for social consumption and export.
As part of his strategy of visits to different municipalities of the country, Díaz-Canel then went to the Porcien Mixed Enterprise, dedicated to pork production and belonging to the Mayabeque Agroforestry Group.
At Porcien, located in Valle del Perú, a group of nine workers maintains eight sheds with pigs from different stages: maternity, pre-fattening, fattening, and breeding, the newspaper reported.
Díaz-Canel inquired about the meat production process, resources, animal care, their feeding, and labor conditions for the staff.
Also accompanying the President were Edelso Antonio Ramos Linares, First Secretary of the Provincial PCC Committee in Mayabeque; Manuel Aguiar Lamas, governor; and Héctor Giniebra Junco, director of the Agro-livestock and Forestry Business Group. (Source: ACN)
