Niceto Pérez, Oct. 2 – Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, arrived today in the community of Ullao, Niceto Pérez municipality, Guantánamo, to assess the damage caused by the recent rains in one of the towns hardest hit by the tropical wave that became Tropical Storm Imelda in recent days.
Accompanying Díaz-Canel were Manuel Marrero Cruz, member of the Political Bureau of the Party's Central Committee and Prime Minister; Inés María Chapman Waugh, Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba; as well as Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the PCC in the province; and Alis Azahares Torreblanca, Governor of Guantánamo.
The leader was received by the people of Ullao, which has 1,187 inhabitants mainly residing in multi-family buildings, where 597 millimeters of rain were recorded in 72 hours, causing the overflow of the Seco River into the town, water entering homes, and roof leaks.
Rogelio Castillo Martínez, president of the Ullao People's Council, explained that work is underway to restore, clean, and sanitize the town, located about 25 kilometers southwest of Guantánamo and close to the illegal naval base that the United States government has maintained on Cuban soil for more than 120 years against the will of the people.
Previously, Díaz-Canel visited the settlement of Hatibonico, in the municipality of Caimanera, an ecological reserve site, where 657 millimeters of rain fell in 72 hours. (Source: ACN)
