Jimaguayú, Camagüey, Oct 4 - The women farmers of Jimaguayú reaffirm their commitment to promote local development from the soil, aiming to contribute to import substitution. In the fertile land around the town, these women work with patience and discipline, caring for each seed as a promise of the future.
The initiative comes from brigades coordinated by the Cuban Women’s Federation and the National Association of Small Farmers (FMC-ANAP). This group unites women farmers from various communities with a common goal: to strengthen local production and food security by optimizing irrigation, raising small livestock, rotating crops, and using more sustainable inputs.
The FMC-ANAP collaboration helps highlight achievements and challenges, promoting technological innovation adapted to the local context using agroecology and integrated pest management to reduce agrochemical use and encourage ecological solutions.
Women also play a key role in raising small livestock, often taking care of daily management, feeding, monitoring births, and raising young animals. Their practical knowledge and traditional experience allow closer management of the herds and family resources, improving productivity and animal welfare.
With a spirit of solidarity, they maintain cohesion amid climate challenges and administrative procedures, aiming for a more equitable and self-sufficient future.
The FMC-ANAP brigades represent an efficient, sustainable local response to rural development challenges in Jimaguayú. Their collective action proves women’s work can tip the balance toward a more independent economy, strengthening food sovereignty and serving as an example for other communities in the country.
