From construction to the land: a new life in the furrow (+ Photos)

Guáimaro, Camagüey, Nov 22.- For brothers Camilo and Yosvani Betancourt Rodríguez, their true destiny was not a place, but a trade. After years dedicated to construction, building walls and carrying bricks, they decided to radically change course. Now, their lives are no longer measured in square meters of concrete, but in open furrows and planted seeds.

These hardworking natives of Guáimaro begin each day with the conviction that their health and willpower are more than enough to challenge the oppressive sun and fatigue. Their mission is to clear a path through the weeds and expand the cultivated areas. In those moist, fertile soils where healthy, abundant food grows, they have discovered a guiding principle: discipline, responsibility, and a sense of belonging are the true alchemy that transforms effort into productivity and sacrifice into hope.

Camilo, who for nearly three decades drove the garbage truck to the dump, changed his route without losing sight of his work ethic. Now, when resources allow, he drives the vehicle for the urban farm. From that seat, he once again feels that his work sustains life, and that every furrow he traces is a commitment fulfilled to local agriculture.

In 2024, Justo Fermín Leiva Caso, a man hardened by hard work, joined this project. With extensive experience as an agricultural machinery operator in Loma del Corojo and at the Cuatro de Abril Basic Unit of Cooperative Production, and later as an asphalt specialist for over 20 years, Justo Fermín found a return to his roots in the land.

Today, together with Camilo, Yosvani, Rafael Arcángel and Yuniober, he once again puts his hands to the service of the land with the same strength and dedication that have characterized him throughout his life.

Times are difficult, but the determination of these five farmworkers is even stronger. In their daily work, they embody the words of the Apostle of Cuban independence, José Martí: “If man serves, the land serves”. Their story is a testament to resilience and faith in the transformative power of work well done. (Text and photos: Radio Guáimaro)
