China rejects U.S. coercion and emphasizes support for Cuba

Beijing, October 23. - China today rejected the coercive tactics and pressures from the United States on other nations, while underscoring its support for Cuba against the blockade imposed by Washington for over 60 years.

In response to a question from Prensa Latina, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the North American country not only fails to reflect on its actions but intensifies its policy of coercion, which violates international law, the basic principles of international relations, and humanitarian law.

He emphasized that this stance places the United States against justice and equity, which will generate widespread opposition from the international community.

He indicated that China firmly opposes the U.S. blockade and has voted in favor of the Cuban resolution in the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) for 32 consecutive years, since 1992.

He added that nearly 190 countries support said resolution, clearly evidencing the world's majority position.

Guo reiterated China's support for the Cuban people's right to choose their own path of development, defend their sovereignty, and reject external interferences.

He pointed out that Washington must take concrete measures to improve its relations with Havana and contribute to peace and stability in the region.

On several occasions, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has urged the United States to lift the blockade as soon as possible and remove the island from the so-called list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The UN General Assembly has approved the resolution presented by Cuba against the U.S. blockade annually since 1992.

Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, emphasized yesterday that the United States is resorting to intimidation and blackmail tactics to undermine international support for lifting the blockade, in a maneuver he described as a disrespectful offensive.

During a press conference in Havana, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that the actions of the U.S. government undermine the sovereignty of states and the right of each nation to freely decide its vote in the UN General Assembly.

Rodríguez presented copies of official communications sent by Washington to numerous governments in which, he claimed, gross pressures, direct threats, and slanderous arguments are used to dissuade countries, especially from Latin America and Europe, from continuing their support against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.

Additionally, he detailed that Washington's pressure includes the refusal of third countries to supply spare parts or fuel to Cuba, as recently occurred with one of the country's main thermoelectric plants, directly affecting the national electrical system. (Text and photo: PL)
