
Luanda, October 24. - Angolan President João Lourenço headed today the seventh ceremony for the presentation of the commemorative medal for the 50th anniversary of national independence, to outstanding personalities from the country and other nations.
More than 700 people will be honored between Friday and Saturday for their contributions to the construction of the nation, both in achieving liberation from Portuguese colonialism, as well as in the struggle for the preservation of sovereignty, the achievement of peace and reconstruction, and advances in different sectors.
The commemorative medal for the half-century of independence, which will be celebrated on November 11, was awarded in two categories: the one called Independence, which on this occasion was received by 130 people; and the Peace and Development Class, which was decided to be given to 644, including eight Cubans.
Around two thousand prominent figures from politics, defense, culture, sports, civil society, research, and other fields have received this award to date.
President Lourenço announced on October 15, during the State of the Nation speech, that medals will also be awarded to the signers of the Alvor Accords: António Agostinho Neto, Holden Roberto, and Jonas Savimbi, a decision very well received by the members of the National Assembly as a symbol of reconciliation.
