Cuba celebrates diplomatic victory against US blockade at the UN

Havana, October 29 – President Miguel Díaz-Canel celebrated today the overwhelming support of the international community at the United Nations General Assembly, where 165 member states rejected the United States' blockade of Cuba.

The president emphasized on social media that “Cuba, dignified, resilient, without any fear of the turbulent, brutal, cynical, and deceitful empire, has once again defeated the six-decade-long genocidal blockade.”

In that context, he denounced that “the crude Yankee pressure managed to break a few. But the majority of the world once again voted alongside Cuba for Life.”

The Caribbean nation obtained 165 votes in favor of the resolution calling for an end to the US blockade, with seven votes against and 12 abstentions.

Experts from the Cuban Foreign Ministry highlighted in special news segments the symbolic value of the diplomatic victory, despite the pressure exerted by Washington on its allies to obstruct the vote.

The vote marked the thirty-third consecutive year that the UN has almost unanimously condemned this coercive policy, which the Cuban government denounces as the main cause of the underdevelopment and economic difficulties facing the island.

“This day demonstrates, once again, that the blockade not only affects one country, but millions of Cubans in their right to development,” stated a specialist from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, who emphasized that, although the resolution is not legally binding, it constitutes a moral, legitimate, and legal claim supported by the vast majority of the international community.
