In Camagüey, dance is more than a party: it's a legacy (+ Photos)

Camagüey, November 29 - The Plaza de los Trabajadores (Workers' Square) vibrated this Friday with salsa, guaguancó, and casino during the 24th Solamente Solos Choreography Competition.

The space was transformed into an explosion of rhythm and color, where dance once again stood as an act of celebration, encounter, and cultural resistance.

The person in charge of leading this master class was Lic. Gleyner Delgado Nápoles, a recognized dancer, choreographer, and winner of the TV contest Bailando en Cuba. With his mastery and charisma, he made the entire square vibrate to the beat of traditional rhythms, integrating children and adults into a collective and improvised choreography.

As if it were a rehearsal, those present let themselves be carried away by the contagious clave, demonstrating that when Cuban music plays, it's impossible to stay seated. It was a moment of spontaneous communion that highlighted the living force of the island's musical roots.

In an interview, Delgado Nápoles reflected on the urgency of cultivating and defending native rhythms. "The monopolization of cultural industries penetrates the authenticity of each people and often tries to erase their traditional sounds and dances," he warned, noting that Cuba is not immune to this global phenomenon.

Amid the revelry, a deeper truth became clear: dance transcends mere entertainment to become an act of memory. Every step, every turn, and every rhythm that echoed in the square conversed with a history that resists oblivion. In the face of cultural colonization processes, these everyday gestures of Cuban identity reveal that it is preserved not only on institutional stages but in the spontaneity of a people who dance because they recognize in these rhythms an inalienable part of themselves.
