Camagüey, December 3 - The Health Promotion and Diseases Prevention Unit (Prosalud, for its acronym in Spanish) in Camagüey celebrates Latin American Medicine Day every December 3, a date that pays tribute to the work of all health professionals.
MSc. Ana Isabel Abay Márquez, head of the Prosalud Department, recalled the legacy of the illustrious Cuban physician Carlos J. Finlay Barrés, who discovered the transmitting agent of yellow fever. This discovery not only transformed medicine but also underscored the importance of research and prevention in public health.
He acknowledged the work of doctors and nurses who, day after day, combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for transmitting diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. These professionals are on the front lines in clinics and hospitals, providing care to affected patients with a humane and compassionate approach. “Their dedication is vital in a context where community health faces constant challenges,” Abay Márquez emphasized.

The health hearings held in the neighborhoods are meetings where specialists and health promoters discuss topics on prevention and self-care. These activities aim to educate citizens about the importance of preventing arboviruses. Abay Márquez stressed that “health education is a fundamental pillar in combating vector-borne diseases.”
Healthcare workers in Cuba are recognized for their exceptionally high level of training and strong ethical values. This recognition is evident not only in their daily work, but also in the way they dedicate themselves to their duties with altruism and solidarity, characteristics that make them true heroes in their communities. The celebration of Latin American Medicine Day thus becomes a recognition of their unwavering commitment to the well-being of the population.
