Cuban Women Defeat Kazakhstan’s Women in President's Handball Cup

Havana, Dec. 5 - The Cuban women's national handball team defeated Kazakhstan in their opening match of the President's Handball Cup.

A goal by Odalys Escalona in the final seconds of the game gave the team coached by Jorge Coll their first victory, with a final score of 29-28.

To do this they had to overcome an adverse score of 12-14 at halftime, which they resolved with a favorable 17-14 in the next half.

Escalona herself finished with six goals for a team that also featured standout performances from Lorena Téllez, the game's top scorer with 10 goals, and Shakira Robert, with seven.

What was striking was that Amanda Toledo didn't manage to score at all during the game, although it can be seen as a positive that her teammates took the lead and secured the victory.

After going winless in the group stage of the 2025 IHF Women's World Championship in Germany and the Netherlands, and failing to advance to the Main Round, the team from the Island started off on the right foot in the consolation round.

This Saturday they will face the Egyptian team, and on Monday they will close the first stage of this event against China, their last opponent in Group II, based on rankings between 17th and 24th positions. (Text and photo: JIT)
