Conference in Camagüey for improved care for cancer patients

Camagüey, December 8 - More than 80 healthcare professionals gathered at the Territorial Scientific Conference on Oncology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine Camagüey 2025, where they presented various research projects aimed at improving care for cancer patients.

The event commemorated the 70th anniversary of the María Curie Provincial Cancer Hospital in this city, which treats patients from the province of Camagüey and other territories such as Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas, particularly in the field of radiotherapy.

The participants, including five physicians from Ciego de Ávila, presented papers related to all lines of action in this field, which impact patient care. These presentations included six free topics, 12 posters, and seven lectures, covering interventions from psychological, surgical, clinical, and radiotherapeutic perspectives, as well as the general principles of an oncological surgeon.

"This type of meeting provides us with invaluable knowledge for developing therapeutic approaches, modifying behaviors, and evaluating a process of getting closer to the patient, all fundamentally aimed at improving the quality of what we do," stated Dr. Leonardo Hernández Herrera, director of the institution, to the Cuban News Agency.

In this regard, he emphasized the importance of disease prevention, so that patients arrive at the hospital without already having the illness. He mentioned ways to avoid this condition, such as avoiding smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and stress, hence his assertion that it is crucial to control diseases early.

The presentation by the young doctor Lianyi Lugo Serrano, part of a collaborative project with Dr. Fernando Cabrera Estévez, who practices at the Homeopathic Pharmacy on Avellaneda Street in Camagüey, focuses on the contributions of natural and traditional medicine to oncology.

Lugo Serrano explained that natural medicine has 11 approved modalities in Cuba, all of which offer some benefit to oncology, both in preventing cancer and by treating others that may appear in a patient already diagnosed.

At the aforementioned consultation, cases of men seeking to avoid surgery for this reason are recurrent, hence the research, which delved into the benefits of a complex of three homeopathic medications used to treat the first stage of benign prostatic hyperplasia, which begins with cell growth that can produce cancer.

As they have corroborated, the treatment, specially prepared for each patient at the mentioned pharmacy, helps alleviate frequent symptoms such as irritation when urinating, dripping, and to date, it has been shown to stop prostate growth, preventing people from reaching the operating room.

The doctor emphasized the value of other specialists learning about this study, already conducted on several patients, and they will continue to share the results in order to extend the application of the preparation.

In general, natural medicine has more benefit than risk, as it is not aggressive for the patient, is low cost, avoids hospitalization, or shortens the stay in the healthcare institution, she argued.

Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide and currently the second leading cause in the province of Camagüey, preceded by cardiovascular diseases.

Inaugurated on December 3, 1955, the Camagüey Oncology Hospital has a highly qualified team of professionals who dedicate all their efforts to the development of the specialty in this central-eastern region of Cuba. (Text and photo: Jorge Luis Moreira Massagué/ACN)
