UNEAC condemns U.S. military aggression against Venezuela

Havana, January 3 – The Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) today condemned the military aggression of the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, following reports early this morning of bombardments in Caracas and other locations across the South American country.

From the Cuban culture portal Cubarte, the institution in a statement called upon the world's intellectuals to denounce the criminal military aggression ordered by the Washington government and urged that the well-being of nations prevail, from the perspective of art, creation, and a culture of peace.

Given its importance, the Cuban News Agency publishes below, in full, the text of the declaration.

Declaration of UNEAC regarding U.S. aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

We, the Cuban writers and artists who are members of UNEAC, vigorously condemn the military aggression of the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Reports since the early hours of today detail bombardments and warlike actions against Caracas and other locations in the country, which represent serious threats to the stability of Our America.

In recent weeks, the U.S. government had increased its maritime and aerial blockade against the Caribbean nation, as part of "Operation Southern Lance," designed under the pretext of the fight against drug trafficking. However, the true objective was publicly declared by President Donald Trump when pointing out the imperial interest in seizing Venezuela's oil and land.

These violent actions against the brotherly Venezuelan people flagrantly violate International Law and the United Nations Charter. The United States seeks to forcefully impose the Monroe Doctrine and undermine the principles assumed in the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, by the 33 member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

We call upon the world's intellectuals to denounce the criminal military aggression ordered by the United States Government against Venezuela. We urge that the well-being of our nations prevail, from the perspective of art, creation, and a culture of peace. Let us join in solidarity with the homeland of Simón Bolívar and unite in the demand for respect for the lives of our Venezuelan brothers and sisters, and for the self-determination and sovereignty of our peoples.
