Civil Defense, EU, and UN reaffirm cooperation in disaster response


Havana, Jan 20. - Division General Ramón Pardo Guerra, head of the National Civil Defense Staff (DC, for its acronym in Spanish), presided over a meeting in this capital with representatives of the European Union and the United Nations System in Cuba, where the commitment to cooperation and preparedness in the face of risks and disasters was reaffirmed, reported the DC from its Facebook profile.

The meeting was attended by Daniela D’Urso, Caribbean Coordinator of the Regional Office of the European Union's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG-ECHO); Francisco Pichón, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cuba; Laura Zimballa, Head of ECHO in Brussels; and Joao Anselmo, from the Delegation of the European Union in Cuba.

Specialists from the National Civil Defense Staff also attended the meeting, which addressed topics related to technical cooperation and capacity building to face natural and technological emergencies.

Participants emphasized the importance of maintaining coordination between national and international institutions to ensure an effective response to risk situations that may affect the population.

The exchange allowed for a review of previous collaboration experiences and the definition of new areas of joint work, with an emphasis on community preparedness and comprehensive disaster management.

They also underscored that international cooperation is an essential element for strengthening the country's response capacity and protecting people's lives. (Text and photo: ACN)
