Camagüey, Feb 2.- The workers of the "10 de Octubre" Thermoelectric Plant (CTE), in the Nuevitas municipality, in this province's industrial city, celebrated the 57th anniversary of the synchronization of the plant's first unit, continuing a tradition of perseverance and dedication to guaranteeing national power generation.
Despite the significant resource limitations caused by the tightening of the U.S. government's economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, which directly impacts this sector, the employees of this emblematic company achieved 96 percent of their core activity during 2025.
Amid a tense situation in the National Electric System (SEN, for its acronym in Spanish), the will of the workers and specialists prevails in resolving breakdowns and carrying out repairs, as dedication is inherent to those who work in this field.
Jorge Luis MaceiraEsteva, general director of the Nuevitas CTE, conveyed recognition to all the plant's workers, the majority of whom are directly involved in production—a continuous task involving long workdays, even sacrificing time with family.
MaceiraEsteva, a mechanical engineer with 20 years at the plant since graduation, stated that one of the achievements of the previous year was the continued online operation of both units with the SEN, particularly unit five, the less efficient one, which is currently undergoing extended partial maintenance for approximately six months.
Meanwhile, unit six, operating in a limited capacity, contributes 74 megawatts (MW), as it has a crack in a joint that does not allow the load to be increased for now, in addition to a broken circulation pump that is being repaired in the entity's workshop.
The celebration of the 57th anniversary of the first start-up of the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant provided an opportune moment to recognize outstanding workers from the previous year and those who have accumulated 20 and 25 years of continuous service with the company. The latter group received the "ÑicoLópez" Distinction, the highest award granted by the National Union of Energy and Mine Workers.
OrlenysCalderín Sánchez, general secretary of the union bureau, affirmed that the most valuable asset of the thermoelectric plant is its human capital, composed of 624 men and women, always on the front lines, striving to ensure the generator's continued operation within the SEN.
A specialist in Chemistry, Orlenys has spent two decades at the center, which he considers his second home, due to all the experience he has gained there, where a strong movement of innovators operates, recognized on multiple occasions, and indispensable when it comes to contributions and the stable operation of the plant.
The collective of the Nuevitas Thermoelectric Plant recalls, during this current celebratory day and in the year of its centennial, the legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who visited it on several occasions during tours of the Camagüey industrial complex located in this northern city.
