Group of friends of the UN Charter condemn new U.S. sanctions

Havana, Feb. 4 - The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations condemned the new measures announced by the United States Government to tighten the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba through actions aimed at obstructing the supply of petroleum and sanctioning third-party states, reported the Cuban Foreign Ministry's website, Cubaminrex.

In a special statement, the Group of Friends rejected the intention to impose tariffs on products from countries that, in the legitimate exercise of their sovereignty, supply petroleum to Cuba, and described these provisions as a deliberate attempt to strangle the island's economy.

Special Statement by the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations Rejecting the Latest Measures Announced by the Government of the United States Aimed at Further Tightening its Criminal Blockade Against the Republic of Cuba

The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations strongly condemns the announcement by the Government of the United States of America of a new set of extreme measures aimed at further tightening the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed against the Republic of Cuba, through actions designed to obstruct the supply of petroleum to the country and sanction third-party states that maintain legitimate trade relations with Cuba.

The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations categorically reject the declared intention of the Government of the United States of America to impose tariffs on products from countries that, in the legitimate exercise of their sovereignty, sell or supply petroleum to the Republic of Cuba. Such actions, based on a narrative constructed on falsehoods intended to present the Republic of Cuba as a non-existent threat, seek to deliberately strangle the Cuban economy and inflict additional suffering on the Cuban people.

The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations underscores that the use of blackmail, intimidation, and economic coercion to compel other states to comply with unilateral policies, including through the threat or imposition of arbitrary and abusive tariffs, constitutes a flagrant violation of the rules of free trade, international law, and the Charter of the United Nations. Furthermore, such practices undermine the principles of sovereign equality, non-intervention in the internal affairs of states, and the right of peoples to self-determination.

The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations recall that, for over six decades, the Cuban people have been subjected to the most prolonged and cruel economic, commercial, and financial blockade ever applied against any country. In this context, the recently announced measures clearly aim to deliberately worsen the living conditions of the population and deprive the Republic of Cuba of essential resources, including vital energy supplies for economic activity and social well-being.

The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations notes that these measures also demonstrate that the attempt to present the blockade as a mere "bilateral commercial embargo" is a distortion of reality that ignores its clearly extraterritorial reach and its profound impact on third countries and on international economic relations.

The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations reiterate their unwavering solidarity with the people and Government of the Republic of Cuba and urge the international community to firmly reject this act of aggression, reiterate the call of the United Nations General Assembly for the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba, and to defend international law, multilateralism, and respect for the Charter of the United Nations, in its entirety and interconnections.
