INSMET encourages measures to protect air quality

Havana, Feb 23 - The Institute of Meteorology of Cuba (INSMET) urged the population on its social media to strengthen the protection of air quality in homes, given the increased use of charcoal and firewood due to the current energy crisis.

Dr. Yazenia Linares, a specialist at INSMET, stated that the combustion of solid biomass in poorly ventilated spaces generates pollutants such as fine particles (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide, linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases according to the World Health Organization.

The expert noted that the most vulnerable groups are children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with respiratory conditions, who may experience worsening symptoms due to prolonged exposure to indoor smoke.

Linares recommended cooking outdoors or in open areas, ensuring adequate ventilation, and keeping children and vulnerable people away from the combustion area, measures that reduce the concentration of pollutants in the home environment.

INSMET emphasized that atmospheric conditions influence smoke accumulation, especially on days with little wind or stability, which increases exposure in certain areas.

Promoting safe cooking practices and strengthening environmental education helps prevent risks and improve family and community life.

Air quality, both inside and outside the home, is essential for public health and caring for it is everyone's responsibility, it noted. (ACN) (Photo: Taken from Internet)
