Havana, Feb 26.- The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC, for its acronym in Spanish) will deploy a nationwide program of activities for International Women's Day, next March 8, dedicated to strengthening community work, food production, and care for vulnerable people.
During the press conference held at the organization's national headquarters, Teresa Amarelle Boué, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and secretary general of the FMC, began her speech by rejecting the recent aggression perpetrated from a boat coming from the United States against the Cuban border guard forces.
"Faced with this aggressiveness from the United States government, the Cuban people, through our armed forces, cannot stand idly by. Cuban women will always be there, alongside their homeland, alongside their people," she stated.
Amarelle Boué explained that the March 8 commemoration is part of the first stage of the political process "The Fidel that lives in me," designed to reaffirm the role of Cuban women and the organization in the country's current conditions.
As the generation marking the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, we will not renounce the legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, who was also a person aware of the importance of fighting for gender equality, she emphasized.
The leader announced that the province of Artemisa was recognized as the vanguard in the emulation for March 8, also highlighting the provinces of Villa Clara, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila, and Santiago de Cuba for their consistent results and the incorporation of women into the economic, political, and social life of their territories.
AnierkaFernández del Monte, member of the National Secretariat in charge of the area of women's promotion and family care, detailed that actions will be concentrated in communities and clarified that the objective will be to reach grassroots structures, exchange ideas with women, and listen to and address any complaints or concerns.
She explained that priority will be given to caring for vulnerable people, mothers with children who need the organization's presence, as well as cleaning campaigns in hospitals and nursing homes.
Fernández del Monte emphasized the need to revive food production in patios and on rooftops, and to transform micro-dumps into parks or sustainable consumption areas.
"When there is an initiative that comes from the organization, CDR members, constituents, and deputies join in, and it is something the homeland needs," she noted.
MarilysZayas Shuman, director of Mujeres magazine, reported on the social media deployment, where life stories, testimonies, and the series "Cuban Women" will be featured, and also the contest "How I Dream My March 8" will be launched so that young women can express their aspirations and impressions regarding the date.
To commemorate the occasion, there will be admission ceremonies to the organization, the presentation of the March 8 award to cultural personalities, and the creation of recognitions for the 66th anniversary of the FMC.
The crusade for equity will be resumed, focused on insisting on sexual education, debate on topics of interest such as teenage pregnancy and gender violence, and women and family guidance centers will be strengthened.
Internationally, the FMC held a virtual meeting with more than 130 representatives of similar organizations from 58 countries, under the motto "Women of the world in solidarity with Cuba and in defense of its sovereignty."
They also announced that in the coming days, the exhibition "Beijing +30: The Route to Equality" will be inaugurated at the national headquarters, tracing Cuba's milestones in gender matters since the 4th World Conference on Women, held in the capital of the Asian giant in 1995.
Those present highlighted the importance of the celebration combining joy with commitment, because this March 8 should become a tribute to all Cuban women wherever they are, contributing and demonstrating the resilience that characterizes those born on the Island. (Text and photo: ACN)
