Camagüey, Dec. 23. – Two students from Camagüey achieved outstanding results at the 27th Central American and Caribbean Mathematics Olympiad, held in Costa Rica from December 6 to 12, 2025.
Yeison Alejandro David Abreu, from the municipality of Nuevitas, won a silver medal, while Javier Ernesto Galindo Nápoles, from the Máximo Gómez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE, for its acronym in Spanish), took home the bronze medal, demonstrating their talent and creativity against young people from across the region.
Yeison was trained at the Camagüey Vocational School alongside other outstanding students, under the guidance of coaches Osmani Morciego and Heriberto Donet. Although he is not a student at the IPVCE, the training he received strengthened his mathematical skills and allowed him to tackle problems in an ingenious and effective manner.
For his part, Javier qualified for the national preselection when he was still in ninth grade, after being invited to the tenth-grade Mathematics competition and achieving excellent results. This demonstrates that including talented youth from the last year of junior high school in IPVCEs is a successful strategy.
After qualifying in Cuba's national preselection, both students represented the country in the regional competition, winning their silver and bronze medals and showing that, with effort, perseverance, and adequate support, any challenge can be turned into an opportunity to grow and achieve goals. Their example inspires many young people in Camagüey and the rest of the country.
The 27th Mathematical Olympiad brought together the best talents from Central America and the Caribbean and also awarded another Cuban, Diego García Rodríguez, from the Eusebio Olivera Rodríguez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences in Sancti Spíritus, who won a gold medal, reflecting the dedication and creativity of Cuban students in international competitions.
