Camagüey, December 23 - 184 years after his birth, the people of Camagüey remembered their most illustrious son: Major General of the Liberation Army, Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz, an essential figure in national history, whose legacy remains alive in the memory and pride of this land.

As every year, the Birthplace Museum became a meeting point to pay homage to his legacy. In that space, the reasons why the people of Camagüey keep his spirit alive were reaffirmed, to the point that a unique phenomenon in the country emerged: the adoption of the demonym "Agramontinos," an expression of identity and belonging.

During the solemn ceremony preceding the traditional pilgrimage, Mailén Fernández, head of the History Department at the University of Camagüey, highlighted Ignacio Agramonte's exceptional military strategic skills and his unique organizational capacity to lead an army, qualities that made the Camagüey battalion one of the best-structured in the country during the wars for independence.

"He was not only an excellent military man and strategist, but also a devoted husband; this is reflected in the correspondence addressed to Amalia Simoni, a testament to his profound human fiber," the specialist expressed.

In the brief but intense period of three and a half years within the Liberation Army, Ignacio Agramonte participated in more than one hundred combat actions.

At the head of the troops, he managed to masterfully articulate the fundamentals of military tactics with irregular warfare forms, adapted to the geographical particularities of the vast local savannas.

Historical sources highlight that he succeeded in consolidating a firm operational base in the region and prioritized the comprehensive training of chiefs and officers. For this purpose, he promoted the creation of military instruction centers, among them the renowned school of Jimaguayú, decisive in the preparation of the leaders of the Mambí army.

José Martí synthesized his essence by stating, "From Agramonte, virtue," a phrase that summarizes his human worth, his conciliatory capacity, and his deep sense of unity. That is why Camagüey and Cuba commemorate the anniversary today and celebrate one of the most valuable men this land has produced.
