Nuevitas: natural and legendary

History tells that in this bay, between 1514 and 1515, the Spanish conqueror Diego Velázquez founded the village of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe. Nuevitas is one of the biggest exchange anchorages of Cuba, declared protected area in the Wildlife Refuge category due to the values it treasures.

The same city of the Ballenatos Cays, a zone with high ecological fragility and abundant biodiversity.  In the Ballenato that is in the middle, the higher one that measures 54 m over sea level; it can be found the rare and colorful lizard with crest (Anolis jubar ballaenarum), unique in the world and whose tail seems like a thin and long leaf. There are abundant populations of iguanas, insects and aquatic and migratory birds that nest there.

It is this land where maize flour is elaborated with the crab they fish in the bay platform, traditional dish in Nuevitas’ cuisine. This is a place where the patrimonial past joins to daily work of its people and the Revolutions’ work of creation that from 1959 transformed this homeland into an “industrial city” from the province of Camagüey

Nuevitas is located in the northwest of Camagüey city, and according to its size, it is the smallest municipality of the province.

Nuevitas bay allows maritime commerce, the exchange with other cultures, but above all, it gives the opportunity to enjoy a warm sea bath.

Ballenato Cays are a zone with high ecological fragility and one of the first 33 approved protected areas in Cuba.

Reptiles are one of the most important groups: the lizard with crest (Anolis jubar ballaenarum), local endemic sub-species and the national endemic iguana (Cycluranubilanubila).

The construction of the Parish Church of Our Lady of Charity of Nuevitas begins in 1871 and ends in 1878. There it is the baptismal font that belonged to The Solitude Church where Gertrudis Gómez de Avellenda and Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz were baptized.
