Ecuadorian presidential candidates finish debate prior to runoff

Quito, Oct 2.- The candidates for the Presidency of Ecuador, Luisa González (Citizen Revolution) and Daniel Noboa (National Democratic Action Alliance), held this Sunday the debate prior to the runoff, scheduled for October 15.

The candidates presented aspects of their government programs and other arguments around four thematic axes: economy, security, social and politics. They also exercised the right to reply and counter-reply. In the final segment, they sent a message to the citizens.

Regarding fiscal sustainability, dollarization and other economic issues, Noboa expressed that the country must be competitive and to do so it will invest in improving electricity generation, refining crude oil in the national territory, taxes will be deducted from companies that generate jobs - in particularly for young people - and foreign investors will be attracted, among others. He added that he would attract $1.5 billion from the reserve, although he did not say how or over what time frame.

On this topic, González specified that there is a budget deficit of 5,000 million dollars. She stressed that the solution to this problem will not take place overnight and that it is not technical, but rather involves a social-integral approach and investing in education, health, security, employment and the environment.

She announced that he will invest 2.5 billion dollars in productive credits, to reactivate the economy locally, increase oil production, reduce tax exemptions that are not efficient by 30 percent, etc.

Regarding the threats generated by the El Niño atmospheric phenomenon for the population and the productive sector, the Alianza ADN candidate said that education and health services must be promoted, in addition to protecting populations by improving drainage systems, dams and dredging of rivers, among others.

For her part, González explained that he will work to save lives, promote economic growth, improve infrastructure and work together with autonomous governments. To specify the above, she explained that health services and housing plans will be attended to, lines of credit with low interest will be reestablished, debts contracted by citizens with fewer resources will be redefined and an emergency will be declared in roads (roads, fishing ports and bridges).

Citizen security

In this area, González pointed out the importance of the State supervising the use of its resources, confronting corruption, making the justice system transparent and better equipping the National Police. She stressed that the first thing is to throw out the Government of Guillermo Lasso, which he described as corrupt and which plunged the country into the current situation.

She added that he will regain control of public spaces such as ports, airports, roads and prisons. He invited people to confront common crime by confronting poverty, generating employment and opportunities for young people. She announced that in these actions he will use the Armed Forces and will create a commission to identify those responsible for the murder of former candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Noboa indicated that he will militarize borders and apply other actions to provide security. He stressed the importance of increasing citizen surveillance. He admitted that there are ministers and public officials in close ties with the mafias and that they must be brought to justice. (Telesur) (Photo: CNE Ecuador)
