United Nations, Oct. 5.- The United Nations (UN) today celebrates the 75th anniversary of its political missions with a fundamental role in the prevention and resolution of conflicts that cause fatalities around the world.
The date commemorates the establishment of the first of these initiatives to mediate the conflict in Palestine in 1948; Since then, prevention in the midst of tensions became one of the vital functions of the UN.
With the theme Diplomacy for Peace, a commemorative event will remember this Thursday at the UN headquarters the first steps of one of its founding purposes.
Coordinated by the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, the current work of political missions focuses mainly on five areas that include ensuring robust analysis and early warning, as well as preventing hostilities.
In addition, they are responsible for managing political crises and violent conflicts, maintaining peace and promoting alliances.
These support dialogue with special envoys of the organization in areas of tension such as Yemen, Myanmar, Syria, Western Sahara and the name controversy between Greece and Macedonia.
Other nations such as Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan; or the conflicts between Israel and Palestine and the Colombian Verification Mission also receive advice and efforts from these programs.
Meanwhile, some of these missions in the regional offices for Central Africa, West Africa and Central Asia have explicit mandates on preventive diplomacy and on strengthening the capacity of state and regional actors to manage sources of tension peacefully.
