Debate in Costa Rica on the Cuban revolution and the United States blockade

San José, Nov 11.- The Cuban ambassador to Costa Rica, Jorge Rodríguez, reflected on the origins of the US blockade of the island, as a policy aimed at overthrowing its Revolution.

Although it has failed in its objectives, recognized even by the senior leaders of that North American nation, that strategy is maintained and has also intensified in recent years, the diplomat explained.

Invited to the radio space Alternativas, from the Reflexion, Acción collective, Rodríguez pointed out that this policy was accentuated in 1992 and later in 1995 with the so-called Helms Burton Law.

It established, he commented, the course of the country once the Revolution fell and a transitional government was established, as well as sanctions on foreign businessmen who do business with Cuba.

At another point in the discussion The Revolution and a commercial blockade: a view of Cuba's international policy, the diplomat highlighted that 30 years after the revolutionary triumph, the country had resolved the social problems that existed before 1959.

Illiteracy was eradicated, two universities reached 132, infant and maternal mortality rates decreased, and the childhood vaccination scheme covers protection against several diseases, he highlighted.

With a long-range vision, the biopharmaceutical industry was developed, which led after the COVID-19 pandemic, the island's scientists developed three vaccines against this disease, and managed to immunize Cubans.

Students from the University of Costa Rica of social sciences and law participated in the debate and agreed on the little information that is known about the Cuban revolution and its achievements.

There are visions full of prejudices, an erroneous image, there are factors to make this possible, similar to the current vision of what is happening in Palestine, stated one of the panelists. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
