United Nations, Nov 11.- The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, described the situation in Gaza as a place where no one is safe, warning the Security Council of the damage caused to the health infrastructure.
The health system in the enclave is on its knees but continues to provide some life-saving care, said the head of the WHO, invited to the body's session.
Ghebreyesus detailed a complex context with hospital corridors packed with the wounded, sick and dying; overflowing morgues, surgeries without anesthesia and tens of thousands of displaced people taking refuge in hospitals.
At the same time, he emphasized the consequences of the bombings against health facilities.
The WHO, he noted, has verified more than 250 attacks on medical care in Gaza and the West Bank, in addition to another 25 in Israel.
Last week, the Organization documented five attacks against five hospitals in one day. In the last 48 hours alone, four hospitals have been out of service, representing some 430 beds, he lamented.
The best way to support these health workers and the people they serve is by providing them with the tools they need for care: medications, medical equipment and fuel for hospital generators, the representative insisted.
Along those same lines, the Palestinian ambassador, Riyad Mansour, asked the Security Council to act now to stop these massacres.
Hospitals have become the main target of the Israelis; They are besieged and their surroundings bombed, he rejected him.
They want us out of our country, out of our land, the only options they have given us are to submit, leave or die, or in international legal terms, apartheid, ethnic cleansing or genocide, he denounced.
For his part, Russia's representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, reiterated the need for a quick ceasefire, and not short-term pauses.
That is the only way to stop new casualties and allow aid to be delivered as the risk of the conflict spreading to the region increases, he said.
The increased foreign military presence in the area, specifically that of the United States, is part of the overall escalation, the diplomat said.
China's permanent ambassador, Zhang Jun of China, agreed on the urgency of a cessation of hostilities and the Council's action.
Recalling a meeting with stakeholders convened in his capacity as chairman of the security body, Zhang urged meaningful measures to uphold justice and maintain peace.
In the face of all this, the world must speak together, he said. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
