United Nations warns of rapid deterioration of situation in Haiti's capital

United Nations, March 5.- The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, warned about the rapid deterioration of the security situation in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, amid the intensification of gang attacks.

A statement released by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed the high representative's concern, amid the rise in violence and attacks against critical infrastructure such as police stations and two prisons over the weekend.

The text insisted on the need for urgent action, in particular to provide financial support to the Multinational Support Mission, approved to address the pressing security demands of the Haitian people and prevent the country from falling further into chaos.

Guterres called on the Government of Haiti and other political actors to seek agreement on the measures necessary to advance the political process towards the reestablishment of democratic institutions through the holding of elections.

Last Friday, the organization requested urgent actions to promote the Multinational Mission, approved since last October and still without a date to begin its operation.

After the signing of an agreement between the Prime Minister of the Caribbean country, Ariel Henry, with the Kenyan authorities for the deployment of the force, the organization insisted on the need for measures regarding financing and any other type of support.

The increase in violence and the deterioration of the situation highlight the need for faster work on that initiative, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General told reporters at the time.

We have been talking for months about how civilians in Haiti and Port-au-Prince are basically trapped by gang violence, Dujarric warned, recalling that schools remain closed, hospitals do not function and people suffer daily.

Guterres himself urged the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to do much more to ensure the deployment of this Mission without further delays and a political solution that can resolve the country's fundamental problems.

During the bloc's eighth summit, the UN chief considered the situation in Haiti serious, as gangs hold the nation hostage and use sexual violence as a weapon. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
