The United States appoints a new ambassador to Haiti

Port-au-Prince, March 15.- The United States Senate today confirmed the foreign policy advisor of the Pentagon National Guard Office, Denis Hankins, as the new ambassador to Haiti.

The vote was 89 in favor and one against, and thus Hankins replaces Michel B.Siso, just when the security crisis in the Caribbean nation worsens, local media in this capital highlight.

Hankins has 38 years of experience in the United States Foreign Service, and during his career he worked as an ambassador to Mali and performed other duties in Sudan.

Prior to confirmation, he was a foreign policy adviser to the Pentagon's National Guard Bureau.

United States President Joe Biden nominated Hankins in May 2023, when the embassy had already been without a head confirmed by the Senate for 19 months.

Eric Stromayer, chargé d'affaires, headed the diplomatic headquarters during this period, recalled the newspaper Le Nouvelliste.

Washington stressed the importance of Hankins taking office urgently, since at this crucial moment dominated by gangs they can overthrow any transitional government that is established.

We must have an ambassador in place, stated the communications advisor for national security, John Kirby, quoted by the digital version of the Haitian newspaper. (Text: PL)(Photo: Internet)
