Camagüey, March 20.- Dr. Alejandro Álvarez López, a second-degree specialist in orthopedics and traumatology, never imagined that his stay in a wheelchair during his childhood would mark his vocation for a specialty that today allows him to hold the Annual Health Award with his book Primary osteoarthritis of the knee. With a soft smile and extraordinary simplicity, he affirms that for him orthopedics is everything, while he agrees that the greatest recognition is seeing the results in the consultations and the love and trust that his patients show him.

For his significant contributions to scientific knowledge in medical and health sciences, as well as in practice and teaching, the also professor and researcher at the University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey values ??the work of the group of authors of the specialties that They accompanied him throughout the entire process and in the care of patients.

In his work, he recognizes the histological aspects of primary knee osteoarthritis, ranging from physiology and anatomy to clinical and imaging diagnosis, including conservative and surgical treatment modalities that preserve the patient's joint.

Furthermore, his book allows us to evaluate the different degrees of knee osteoarthritis, which affects approximately thirty percent of the population over forty years of age.

It proposes an anesthetic and rehabilitation approach with a series of exercises for before or after the operation, offering notable results in the evolution and aesthetics of the treatment.

The material stands out for its interactive nature, he assured, with proposals for people who do not need the surgical process in a disease that is very common in our country.

"For twenty years caring for patients at the Manuel Ascunce   Domenech University Hospital in Camagüey, I have always led issues related to osteoarthritis due to the marked incidence in the population and the advantages of the operation for minimal access and although other proposals have been made, the novelty of the book It is in the answers it offers for different ailments and different treatments,” he pointed out.

That is why he always felt passionate about the specialty that he joined since he was a student as a volunteer, precisely at the Eduardo Agarmonte Piña Pediatric Hospital to which he returned just a few years ago to continue his studies and contribute to the science and health system.

From the institution he works on several projects, including the second book on the clinical examination manual of the knee and other topics related to orthopedics and simultaneously on research on arthroscopic surgery in children, one of the few places in Cuba in which it is performed and with a personal technique that he plans to present.
