Regional pediatric oncohematology service guaranteed in Camagüey

Camagüey, March 21.- The Eduardo Agramonte Piña Pediatric Hospital, located in Camagüey, is a benchmark in children's oncohematological care in Cuba.

With a multidisciplinary team and dedicated infrastructure, the center provides comprehensive services to children diagnosed with cancer and blood diseases.

Between 20 and 30 new cases are treated annually, coming not only from the territory but also from the provinces of Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas.

Under the direction of Dr. Juan Carlos Arranz Pozo, the service has 20 beds and offers advanced treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies.

In addition, specialized procedures such as linear accelerator radiotherapy are coordinated in Havana.

Arranz Pozo pointed out that the use of Nimotuzumab has shown promising results, especially in children with brain tumors, improving the five-year survival rate.

The institution stands out for its high post-surgical survival rate, a reflection of the commitment and quality of care provided.

This success is a testament to medical progress in Cuba, where the fight against childhood cancer is a national priority.

Kevin Alejandro Guisau González, a brave 13-year-old patient from the province of Las Tunas, is testimony to the resilient spirit that characterizes Cubans.

After a successful operation for an ependymoma in the dorsal region of the spine, Kevin begins to regain mobility, overcoming a paraplegia that had confined him to immobility.

His grandmother, Marilyn Sánchez Reyes, along with the rest of the family, celebrates every step he takes on his road to recovery.

Cuban medicine, despite the restrictions imposed by the US blockade, continues to struggle to provide priority care to cancer patients.

Although access to essential medicines such as Temozolomide is hindered, ingenuity and solidarity allow treatments to continue.

Despite economic adversities, a high percentage of basic protocols for oncohematological treatment are maintained, always seeking to improve the quality of life of infants affected by these conditions. (Dannys Hernández de Luaces/Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
