Vertientes, Camagüey, July 17. - In the Santa Teresa farm, located at kilometer 12 of the Vertientes highway in the municipality of Camagüey, farmer Ariel Santana Estrada promotes livestock and various crops, crucial lines for the province's socioeconomic development.
At 5:30 in the morning, he says, he's already up and about, and after taking a sip of coffee, which his wife makes on the wood-burning stove, he begins to milk the 10 cattle he has designated for this purpose, as he has a livestock of 34 animals, including heifers, yearlings, and lactating cows.
Every day, he collects 60 liters of milk, and although he believes the results still do not meet the needs of the people, he meets this indicator annually.
Of the 11 acres he currently owns, he commented that for more than two years he has dedicated eight to various crops, mainly plantings of banana, corn, squash, melon, cucumber, cassava and beans.
These productions, he said, are destined to the Empresa de Acopio, and also makes donations of those foods to grandparents' houses, homes for children without family support and maternity homes, among other social institutions.
At the age of 46, he believes that without the support of the family there would be no results in agricultural work and he emphasizes that especially the new generations should join in this effort.
He also added that, personally, he has received constant support from the Communist Party of Cuba and the provincial government, which is why he feels an enormous commitment to promoting food production. If there's one thing he's proud of, it's being a farmer who enjoys making the most of the land's bounty. (Source: ACN) (Photo: Radio Camagüey)
