Curiosities, shipwrecks, Adella Shores, discoveries

“Cursed” ship gone for more than a century is found (+ Photos)

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) reported that they found the Adella Shores after it went missing on May 1st. 1909 in Whitefish Point, Michigan (USA). The wooden, steam-powered boat disappeared in Lake Superior with 14 crew members on board.

A bad omen

Locals feared it had been cursed after its teetotal owners named it after the daughter of the owner of the Shores Lumber Company, breaking a bottle of water on its helmet instead of alcohol. Over a period of 15 years, the ship sank twice in shallow waters and had to be refloated.

On April 29, 1909, the ship left for Duluth, Minnesota, with a cargo of salt and they followed a larger steel steamboat through a thick flow of ice. The boat, almost 60 meters long, and the 14 crew members faced a strong gale and were never seen again.

The discovery

In 2021, the Society's director of marine operations, Darryl Ertel, and his brother Dan were netting with sonar and found the ship 70 km northwest of Whitefish Point, more than 198 meters underwater in very good condition of conservation. At that point they were still not sure if it was the ship in question.

"I knew it had to be the Adella Shores when I measured its length because there was no shortage of other boats in that size range," Ertel said. "As soon as I put the ROV [remotely operated vehicle] on for the first time, I was able to see the layout of the boat and was able to compare it to the Adella Shores," he added.

For his part, GLSHS Director of Content and Communications, Corey Adkins, explained that the delay in releasing "the shipwrecks we found" has to do with the fact that each "of these stories is important and deserves to be told with the greatest honor and respect," so "a lot of research goes into making sure they tell the story accurately.
