United Nations, 7 Oct.- UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, urged today to extend international support to Lebanon, where he warned of the tragic cost of the Israeli offensive.
The high representative traveled to the Middle East nation to promote collaborative efforts two weeks after Tel Aviv intensified its campaign.
From Lebanese territory, Grandi called for a ceasefire and said hundreds of thousands of people were homeless in recent days.
"Today I have witnessed the tragic cost that this war is having for entire communities," lamented the head of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
International humanitarian law must be respected and cannot be ignored, he added, warning for the thousands of families who remain outdoors, including children.
"Everyone has told me that they are desperate to feel safe and that air strikes cease so they can return to their cities and towns," he insisted.
The conflict interrupts the urgently needed supply shipments, the Agency added, calling for the preservation of supply routes into and within Lebanon so that the flow of relief items can continue.
“Civilians should not pay the price for the abysmal failure to find political solutions and end this vicious cycle of violence. Now, in this moment of overwhelming need, the world must come to Lebanon's aid,” he said.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, more than a thousand people have been killed in the country and almost 10,000 were injured since October 2023. (Text and photo: PL)
